Conditions Treated

These are among the most common conditions treated by physicians at Willis-Knighton.

Nearsightedness (myopia) – This is a condition in which objects that are nearby appear clear but those in the distance appear blurred. It can be corrected by glasses, contact lenses or surgery.

Farsightedness (hyperopia) – This is a condition in which objects in the distance appear clear but those that are near appear blurred. It can be corrected by glasses, contact lenses or surgery.

Astigmatism – This term refers to condition created by imperfection in the curvature of the eye that distorts vision.  It can be corrected by glasses, contact lenses or surgery.

Cataracts – Cataracts are clouded lenses of the eye that generally develop as a person ages. They can be corrected with surgery.

Presbyopia – This is occurs as people age and results in difficulty focusing on objects that are nearby. This can be corrected by glasses or surgery.

Glaucoma – Glaucoma refers to eye disease in which pressure within the eye damages the optic nerve. It is serious and can lead to vision loss. It is treated with medication and surgery.

Macular Degeneration – This condition, often called age-related macular degeneration, is characterized by loss of vision in the center of the eye. Lost vision cannot be restored, but treatment may prevent further deterioration.

Retinal Detachment – This refers to a disorder in which the retina (light-sensitive tissue in the eye ) separate from the layers beneath it. It can cause permanent vision loss and is considered a medical emergency.

Diabetic Retinopathy – This is a condition that occurs in people with diabetes and involves damage to the blood vessels in the retina that can lead to vision loss. It can be treated with injections, surgery and medications.

Floaters – Floater occur when the gel-like vitreous in the eye becomes stringy. For some it may just be annoying but for others, it may a symptom of a more serious condition, so it should be evaluated.

Dry Eye – This condition occur when the eye does not produce enough tears to fully lubricate the surface of the eye. It can be treated with medication or insertion of plugs in the eye.

Blepharitis – This is a common condition that refers to an inflammation of the eyelids. It is treated by cleansing the eyelids and by using medications.

Conjunctivitis (pink eye) – This contagious eye disease is characterized by a pink or red coloration in the white part of the eye.  It can be treated with medications.

Strabismus (crossed eyes) – People with this vision problem cannot align both eyes at the same time. It can be treated with vision therapy or with surgery.
