Nine-year-old Shelby Patrick, who nearly drowned in June at East Ridge Country Club, returned Saturday, Aug. 25, to say thank you and give medals of honor to Dr. Giao Do and the staff of the PICU at Willis-Knighton South for saving her life.
Dr. Do described Patrick’s recovery as “completely unbelievable and miraculous.” He described just how critical the fourth grader’s condition was when she arrived in the Emergency Department at South.
“Shelby was comatose, non responsive and her blood gas levels showed she had been under the water for quite some time,” said Do. “It’s not uncommon to survive something like this, but to completely recover like this is rare.”
Last week, Patrick and her mother presented medals to the first responders and parents who saved her at the scene of the drowning.
