The Willis-Knighton Cancer Center is hosting a proton therapy physics workshop in Shreveport on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 22 and 23, featuring local, national and international speakers. More than 70 physicists, dosimetrists and others interested in radiation physics will participate.
Gilles Collin of Ion Beam Applications in Brussels, Belgium, will provide an overview of the ProteusONE System installed at the new Willis-Knighton Proton Therapy Center, and Zuofeng Li, Ph.D., of the University of Florida Proton Therapy Institute in Jacksonville will review his location’s experiences with proton therapy. Mark Pankuch, Ph.D., of ProCure in Warrenville, Ill., will discuss the commissioning of proton treatment beams. Dosimetrist Matt Palmer of M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston will cover proton beam treatment planning. Wayne Newhauser, Ph.D., from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, will speak on accelerator and beam line/gantry design.
Local speakers include radiation oncologists Lane Rosen, M.D., and Ben Wilkinson, M.D., both from the Willis-Knighton Cancer Center, and Terry Wu, Ph.D., the chief physicist at the center. Also on the program are staff physicists Bijal Patel and Jarron Syh. Syh is the first graduate of Willis-Knighton Cancer Center’s physics residency program. The group will have an opportunity to tour the new Proton Therapy Center and the ProteusONE recently installed at Willis-Knighton.
“The response to this workshop has been better than anticipated,” Wu said. “This is an exciting line-up for those of us interested in radiation nuclear physics. Our radiation physics program has attracted national attention as has our new ProteusONE installation and we are pleased to offer this opportunity to learn and share our experiences.”
