RLS is a neurological disorder characterized by the strong urge to move your legs at night and unpleasant sensations in the legs. Discomfort includes the feeling of pins sticking you, pricking, pulling, or crawling feelings. Sensations normally worsen during inactivity, so it is most severe at night.
Moving the legs makes pain better, but only for a short time. For this reason, people with RLS may have insomnia. Recurrent episodes of daytime sleepiness are attributed to tossing and turning in bed and rubbing legs resulting from RLS.
Exercise, massages, as well as elimination of tobacco, caffeine, and alcohol improve RLS. If symptoms are still severe, medication is available.
