(HealthDay News) -- Some risk factors for osteoporosis you can't control -- such as your age, heritage and family history of the brittle bones condition.

But the womenshealth.gov website says there are risk factors than you can control, including:

  • Getting plenty of calcium in your diet each day.
  • Getting plenty of daily vitamin D.
  • Eating a healthy, balanced and nutrient-rich diet.
  • Getting plenty of weight-bearing exercise.
  • Avoiding smoking and drinking alcohol in moderation.
  • Taking medication to reduce bone loss, if your doctor recommends it.
