Avoidant Personality Disorder


This is a mental health disorder that makes you go out of your way to avoid other people. It's more than shyness. That's because you constantly worry about what other people think about you. You have low self esteem, and you're very sensitive to rejection. Avoidant personality disorder makes it hard for you to have healthy relationships.


We don't know what causes this disorder. Several factors may be involved. It may be linked to your genes. It may be linked to the way your brain works, and to things you've experienced growing up.


If you have this disorder, you can't stop thinking about your shortcomings. You are hypersensitive, and your feelings are easily hurt when people criticize you or reject you. It may be hard for you to become friends with people because you're so afraid of being rejected. You may feel shy and lonely. You may avoid social situations, and you may struggle with intimate relationships.


Avoidant personality disorder can be treated with talk therapy. Medications may also help. Your healthcare provider can create a plan that's right for you.
