Pneumocystis Pneumonia (PCP)

This is a serious infection of the lungs. It's caused by a fungus called "Pneumocystis jirovecii." If you're healthy, you may have this fungus in your lungs and not even know it. But if you have a weakened immune system, it makes you very sick. It can be deadly.

How it spreads

How do you get infected? The fungus spreads from person to person through the air. You breathe it in, and it gets into your lungs. If your immune system can't fight it, your lungs become inflamed.

What are the symptoms? You may have a sudden fever and a dry cough. You may have chest pain, tightness, and difficulty breathing. You may have chills, night sweats and weight loss. And you may feel tired.

How do we treat this type of pneumonia? If your symptoms are severe, you may need to stay in the hospital. We give you prescription medicines to help your body fight the infection. Your healthcare provider will create a plan that's right for you.
