Laser Peripheral Iridotomy (LPI)

This surgery creates a small hole in the iris (the colored part of your eye). That helps fluid drain from your eye's rear chamber. It relieves the harmful pressure of glaucoma.

Preparation

To begin, your eye is numbed with drops. A lens is placed on your eye. The lens keeps your eyelids open. And, it gives the doctor a magnified view of your iris.

Laser treatment

Next, the doctor shines the laser into your eye. The energy from the laser creates a permanent hole in your iris. The laser may need to be fired several times to complete the hole. The hole allows excess fluid to flow from the rear of your eye to the front chamber, where it can be absorbed into your bloodstream. This lowers the pressure in your eye.

End of procedure

After the procedure, your vision may be blurry for a brief time. Before you go home, the doctor will check your eye pressure to make sure it's stable. You may be given eyedrops to reduce swelling. You'll come back for a followup exam. Follow your doctor's care plan.
