Suboccipital Surgery for Acoustic Neuroma

This surgery removes a tumor called an "acoustic neuroma." It's found on a nerve in the middle ear.

Preparation

To begin, we give you medicine to put you to sleep. We secure your head and attach electrodes to your face and ear. They monitor your nerves during the surgery. We create an incision in your scalp, and free part of your skull so we can reach your middle ear.

Removing the tumor

Now we carefully expose your acoustic neuroma. To do this, we may need to open a bone that covers the auditory nerve. We carefully separate the tumor from your auditory nerve and remove it. Finally, we close your skull and scalp.

End of Procedure

When the surgery is done, you're monitored in a recovery room. You'll stay in the hospital until your doctor says you can go home. Follow your care plan for a safe recovery.
