Overview

These are bands of scar tissue that grow between your organs. Adhesions can pull on your organs in a harmful way.

Causes

Adhesions are common after surgery on your abdomen. They may form after your tissues are cut or handled, or if your tissues get too dry during surgery. They can form after your tissues touch things like surgical gloves or gauze. Surgical bleeding can lead to adhesions. And, they can form because of radiation treatment, infections or a burst appendix.

Symptoms and Complications

Many adhesions cause no symptoms. But some cause pain when you bend and move. And, they can cause serious complications. An adhesion can cause your intestines to twist and kink. This can block food or waste. It can cause pain, cramping, vomiting and constipation. Adhesions of the female reproductive organs can prevent you from having a baby.

Treatment

Adhesions that are causing pain or complications are treated with surgery. Your healthcare provider can create a plan that's right for you.
