Chemical Peel: Deep (Phenol Peel)

Overview

This treatment rejuvenates the skin of your face. It helps the appearance of deep wrinkles and scars. It can also help blotchy skin, sun-damaged skin, and precancerous growths.

Preparation

Before the peel, you may be given medicine to help you relax. Your skin is cleaned. And it is numbed with anesthetic.

Procedure

Then, the doctor applies a strong chemical solution to your skin. It penetrates the skin's outer layer, called the "epidermis," and part of the deeper layer, called the "dermis." The chemical damages this skin, causing it to turn white or grey. The doctor may treat your face in stages, focusing on one section at a time.

End of procedure

When the treatment is finished, your skin is covered with ointment and dressed with bandages. Your skin will be red and swollen. It will burn and throb. Your eyelids may swell shut. Within a few weeks, a new outer layer of skin will form. You'll need to protect this new skin from sunlight. Your doctor will give you tips to help your recovery.
