Heart Disease and Oral Health

Overview

Many people who have heart disease also have problems with their teeth and gums. Researchers are trying to find out if there is a direct link between the health of your heart and the health of your mouth.

Are They Connected?

One theory is that if you don't have a healthy mouth, harmful bacteria in your gums enter your bloodstream. Eventually the bacteria reach your heart and contribute to heart problems. But more study is needed before we know if there is a connection.

Oral health

Until we fully understand what's happening, it's best to keep your mouth and your heart as healthy as possible. So make sure you brush at least twice a day, and floss daily. See your dentist regularly for cleanings and checkups. Take care of small dental problems before they become big ones.

Heart health

Take steps to maintain your heart health. Keep your weight at a healthy level, don't smoke, and get plenty of exercise. You'll feel better and you'll have more energy to do the things you like to do. If you follow the advice of your doctor and your dentist, you can have a healthy heart and a healthy smile.
