Snapping Scapula Syndrome

Overview

This is a problem that involves the scapula. That's the bone we call the "shoulder blade." With this condition, you have a shoulder blade that catches when you lift or move your arm. You may find this only slightly irritating, or it may be very painful.

Causes

Snapping scapula can be caused by overuse of your shoulder. Training too hard can cause it. So can a traumatic shoulder injury. It can also be caused by a variety of other problems with your bones and soft tissues.

Symptoms

With snapping scapula, you may hear or feel snaps, pops or clicks when you move your arm. You may feel grating, grinding or thumping sensations. This happens along the edge of your shoulder blade. Your shoulder may be painful, and it may feel weak. You may not be able to lift your arm over your head.

Treatment

Treatment options include rest, medications and physical therapy. If those aren't helpful, you may benefit from surgery. Your healthcare provider can create a plan that's right for you.
