Overview

This is a heart problem that is present at birth. In a heart with this syndrome, the left side doesn't fully develop. The underdeveloped left side can't pump enough blood out to the body.

Causes

This syndrome occurs when parts of the heart don't grow properly. We don't know why this happens. A heart with HLHS has an underdeveloped left ventricle. The aorta (that's the main vessel that carries blood out to the body) is smaller than normal. There may also be problems with the valves on the left side of the heart.

Symptoms

Symptoms may begin soon after birth. The baby may have bluish skin and cold hands and feet. The baby may have a pounding heart, and may breathe rapidly. The baby may be weak and tired, and may have feeding problems.

Treatment

This syndrome can be fatal if not treated soon after birth. Treatments include medication and a series of surgeries. Your healthcare provider can create a plan that's right for you.
