Intravitreal Injection

Overview

This injection delivers medicine into the back of your eyeball. It treats certain eye disorders. Often, it's used to get medicine to your retina. It's a simple procedure that can be done in your doctor's office.

Preparation

To begin, you'll lie face up. Your eye is cleaned and numbed. Then, a small device is used to keep your eyelids open. Your doctor tells you to look in a specific direction. You'll stay still and hold this position.

Injection

The doctor carefully guides a small needle through the white part of your eye. You may feel some pressure, but it doesn't hurt. The medicine is injected through the needle into the back of your eyeball.

End of procedure

When the injection is done, the doctor may put drops in your eye to prevent infection. Follow your doctor's instructions as directed.
