Laser Treatment for Nail Fungus
Overview
This simple procedure uses a laser to destroy the fungus that has infected one or more toenails (or, less commonly, fingernails). The laser only destroys the fungus. It doesn't harm your nails or the tissue around them.
Preparation
We treat your nails in the office. You need to take off any nail polish before you come for the session. To begin, we clean your nails. If they're very thick, we may need to thin them to help the laser reach the fungus.
Treating the fungus
Now it's time to treat the infection. We shine a laser on your infected nails. It's designed to penetrate down into the layers where the fungus lives. It heats the fungus and kills the infection. You may feel a warm sensation during the treatment, but this is not painful for most people.
Conclusion
When it's done, you can leave and resume your normal activities. Your treated nails won't look better immediately. But in the months after your treatment, you'll notice healthy new nail material growing from the nail beds. It may take several sessions to completely kill the infection.
