Willis Knighton Health First in Region to offer New Liver Cancer Treatment

May 6, 2026

Willis Knighton Health is the first health organization in North Louisiana to offer histotripsy, a new noninvasive treatment for liver cancer. Gazi Zibari, MD, director of Willis Knighton Advanced Surgery Center, performed the procedure, which uses high-frequency ultrasound waves to selectively destroy liver tumors.

Unlike traditional methods of surgery, radiation or ablation, histotripsy does not require incisions, radiation, needles or invasive procedures. The pioneering treatment offers a new level of precision and safety, allowing for less risk for infection and complications, and faster recovery times compared to traditional therapies.

Dr. Zibari believes histotripsy will replace radio frequency ablation and cryosurgery. He spoke earlier this spring on the emerging role of robotic histotripsy in liver cancer treatment at the 11th Mesopotamian Health Congress in Erbil, Kurdistan. The annual meeting draws Kurdish doctors and health experts from all over the world.

“No longer will our patients with liver cancer have to travel far from home to have access to this novel technology,” Dr. Zibari said. “Willis Knighton Health leadership is committed to bringing the latest technology and most effective treatment options to our community to enhance quality patient care.”

In addition to Dr. Zibari, the Advanced Surgery Center’s Dr. Andrew Crane and Dr. Alana Hofmann also perform histotripsy.
